Calcium - Calcium is one of the most important levels
to keep an eye on while maintaining a custom reef aquarium.
Most corals use calcium from the surrounding sea water to
form their skeletons which is composed primarily of calcium
carbonate.

When choosing a fishtank / aquarium, there are two primary options, a glass tank or an acrylic tank. There are pros and cons with both options. Lets begin with an acrylic tank. Acrylic is a much lighter and somewhat more flexible material thatcan be used to construct your tank / aquarium. Acrylic will allow you to customize your tank / aquarium to any size that you want; however, the tank clarity will be affected. When building a proper fish or coral aquarium, clarity is essential to the look of a tank. You want it to appear like an HD picture. It should seem as if nothing is standing between you and the fish and coral inside your aquarium/ tank. Acrylic has a much greater tendency to scratch and gets many small scratches over time. An example we like to present is that most high-end storefronts or jewelry casements are made out of glass. By comparison, glass is more aesthetically pleasing than acrylic. Low iron (starphire) glass is the most preferred type of glass for your tank/aquarium. This is when the glass goes througha process that removes most of its iron content, allowing the glass to be free of any green tinge. The glass, however, will limit the size of any aquarium/ tank. Depending on the size of the tank, it will either be constructed out of ½ inch or ¾ inch glass. Glass also limits the shapes and sizes of the tank/aquarium. For example, a proper cylindrical tank/aquarium should be constructed out of acrylic. In our opinion, a square or rectangular glass tank/aquarium is a more contemporary and sleeker design. Very often we will be called to a meeting where the client requests a "floor to ceiling" tank/aquarium. In this scenario, a tank this size must be built using acrylic. However, after our presentation of glass and acrylic tanks, many of our customers will choose a smaller tank that is built out of glass. This has been our experience; however, either option will yield a beautiful tank / aquarium.
