What do you imagine when you picture a reef? You’re probably imagining bright colors, thousands of fish, exotic creatures like star fish and corals, a warm sun, and cerulean blue waters. There’s probably also a sparsely populated tropical island nearby full of white sand, palm trees, and a couple of pina coladas with your name on them. Continue reading…

Decorating: you either love it or you hate it. Since you’re reading a blog about custom aquarium design, I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that you love it. Designing a custom aquarium is a truly unique experience because you’re only half of the equation. No matter how much planning you do, it’s ultimately up to the individual creatures in your aquascape to flourish in a complete ecosystem. You can place plants and coral in certain areas, but you have practically zero control in how those creatures grow. Continue reading…

Aquarists have a love-hate relationship with water. On the one hand, it’s the lifeblood of our hobby that helps us create beautiful aquascapes. On the other hand, it can be incredibly difficult to work with. Water has only one objective: to go down. Any hole, gap, or crack in your aquascape will transform your beautiful art piece into a gigantic puddle. Unlike architects, who can create truly bizarre shapes out of rock, stone, and wood, aquarists are seriously limited by water. Some ideas are practically impossible to implement because water just won’t do what you want it to do. Continue reading…

Pink Fish

Henry Ford famously wrote in his autobiography, “Any customer can have a car painted any colour that he wants so long as it is black.” Some people think the same thing about aquarium wildlife, that if you want a specific species of fish then you’re pretty much stuck with the default color. While that may be true for some species of fish, you’d be surprised by just how incredibly diverse fish coloration can be. So today, we’re going to break the mold by looking at interesting color options for some popular species. Continue reading…

When most people go on vacation, they bring back a souvenir. Photographs, knickknacks, and commemorative t-shirts may do a poor job of capturing the essence of a foreign country, but their true value lies in their ability to evoke memories and connect a person to his past. You can do the exact same thing (but better!) with a souvenir aquarium. Yeah, I know that the idea sounds a little bit silly at first, but if you bear with me it’ll all make sense. Red Fire Shrimp

When people design an aquascape, they generally focus on fish, aquatic plants, and coral. It’s easy to overlook shrimp, snails, and other armored denizens of the deep. We want to help your aquarium come out of its shell, so to speak, by proving just how gorgeous shelled animals can be. Continue reading…

Overstocked Aquarium Tank

This question comes up a lot among people who are new to the hobby. They want to create an aquascape that’s absolutely bursting with vibrant fish, but they have a hard time evaluating how much fish can safely coexist in a single tank. Unfortunately, there’s no simple equation that you can apply to every situation. Each species of fish is different, so whatever rules apply to one fish probably won’t apply to another fish. The good news is that there are a few basic guidelines that can help you make the best decision for your aquascape. Continue reading…
