Child and Aquarium

I sincerely believe that every child should have a pet. Animals teach children responsibility and compassion and animals can provide endless companionship and stimulation for an enthusiastic young child. Fish are excellent pets for young children, especially if the child is living in a small apartment that doesn’t allow large pets or if the child is allergic to cats or dogs. It’s no surprise that fish far outnumber cats and dogs as the most popular pet in america — they’re easy to keep, they’re hypoallergenic, and they’re perfect for children. Continue reading…

Goldfish 3D Acrylic Art

I adore art, but it can be really difficult to find a piece of art that captures the beauty of an aquascape. You can certainly find works of art that complement aquascapes, but actually capturing the organic elegance of a living aquascape is a whole different story. An aquascape moves, it grows, it sways in the current with serene grace, and it glitters beneath the light like a living gemstone. You just can’t get that kind of effect in an art piece… well, unless you throw glitter at it. That would make your art piece shine, but it would probably ruin the overall aesthetic. Alas, if only there was an art style that perfectly replicated the beauty of an aquascape. Continue reading…

Yesterday I tackled the intricacies of plant selection. I realize that differentiating between plant species can be a little bit daunting. I mean, for the most part they’re all just green and leafy, right? Well, I’m hoping to show demonstrate just how varied aquatic plants can be by taking a good, hard look at five of the most popular carpet plant species. Continue reading…

One fish, two fish, red fish, blue fish — that’s not just the title of a Dr. Seuss book, it’s also just a few of the near endless number of possibilities for your freshwater aquarium. There are also yellow fish, black fish, purple fish, shrimp, eels, and thousands of other freshwater aquatic species. But what about plants? Flowers Floating on Water

Some people just have to have fresh cut flowers around the house. I’m not one of those people, but I can nonetheless see the appeal: they add a flash of color and vibrant life to any living space. Personally, I think that you can achieve the same thing more successfully with a professional aquascape. But why can’t we have the best of both worlds? Isn’t there a way to combine the color of fresh flowers with the beauty of a serene aquascape? Continue reading…

Lobby Waterfall by Okeanos Aquascaping

I’m heading off to Niagara Falls tomorrow! The three waterfalls that compose Niagara Falls may not be the tallest waterfalls on Earth, but they’re definitely the wettest. Niagara trumps every other waterfall by far when it comes to water flow and volume, boasting a flow rate close to 70,000 cubic feet per second. You’ll find people gathered around Niagara Falls every day of the year because, to put it fsimply, people adore waterfalls. It’s really hard to capture mankind’s adoration for waterfalls and translate it into words. Waterfalls create beautiful movement, calming sounds, and they give us feelings of health and vitality. We try to replicate these features as best we can in fountains and manmade waterfalls, but unfortunately it’s not very practical to install a 100-foot waterfall in your living room. So, you come from the aquarium store with a handful of tiny fish for your new aquarium. They take to their new home swimmingly and begin growing in your tender loving care… but they keep growing, and growing, and growing. Wait, hold on a second! Since you’re reading this blog, it’s safe to say that you’re interested in aquascaping. Of course, everybody has more than one hobby. You probably like football, books, movies, hiking, crafting, or other fun activities. Me? I’m a huge nerd. I get a big kick out of magic swords, dragons, elves, space ships, and pretty much everything from the science fiction and fantasy genres. The other day I got to thinking… why not combine your hobbies? Why not create a hobby-inspired aquascape? Continue reading…
